At Sea Trek, we pride ourselves on our exceptional camp counselors, whose passion for outdoor education and professional experience set us apart from the rest. One such standout is Alice Jessup, a dedicated educator, seasoned paddler, and proud Sea Trek camp graduate. Her unique journey from camper to counselor exemplifies the transformative power of outdoor learning and adventure. We asked Alice to share her experiences and insights about her journey and what makes Sea Trek’s youth programs so special.

What’s your background as an outdoor educator?

I have always loved teaching and working with kids and have my Masters in Elementary Education and my teaching credential. I also have always loved being outside and when I got the opportunity as a 12-year-old to try kayaking and camping at a Sea Trek camp, I jumped on it. I grew so much as a person, learning so many new skills and connecting with the other campers in the natural beauty of Tomales Bay. As an adult, Sea Trek has given me the opportunity to bring together my love of kayaking and teaching to create these transformational outdoor experiences for our campers. My career as an elementary teacher has informed my outdoor guiding practice immensely as I have been able to bring the professional learning I’ve done in equity work, Indigenous studies, and accessibility into my work with campers on the water.

What’s your favorite ever watersports trip?

My favorite watersports trip has to be kayaking amongst whales in Baja! I went with my sister and a friend on Sea Trek’s Baja Coasts and Islands Whale Watching trip and we had the trip of a lifetime with the most spectacular campsites and paddling journeys. During our trip, we were lucky enough to see tons of whale spouts and flukes and even get to be with Grey Whale calves and mothers in their warm lagoon nursery. The icing on the cake of this incredible trip was being surprised by a Fin Whale swimming directly under my kayak! [I promise this is actually my favorite watersports trip and not just a Sea Trek promo! :-)]

What do you love about ST summer camps?

I love that campers bring all different levels of comfort and experience with watersports to camp and are able to participate and find new ways to grow. For some, we get to see them try out a new paddling sport or paddling skill, others are honing their leadership and collaboration skills, and still others are becoming curious about the natural history and ecology of Richardson Bay. It is really special for me to get to know each camper and find ways for them to stretch themselves and be successful throughout our week at camp. Being a former Sea Trek camper myself, I love the joy and energy the campers bring for being together and having fun. The skills and friendships built at Sea Trek Camp last much longer than our five days together!
