Get on the water for Fleet Week: October 11-13!

Each year, the San Francisco Bay is the backdrop of one of the most exciting air shows in the country: Fleet Week! The best place to watch the show, especially during the weekend, is from the water where you can see the aircraft weave around the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz from a prime viewing spot. Watching the Blue Angels fly from the water gives you front-row seats without the crowded shorelines. Here’s how to make the most of your Fleet Week experience—whether you rent a kayak or join one of our Sea Trek’s special Fleet Week tours!

Reserve Your Fleet Week Rental Early

Fleet Week is a popular time to be on the water, and kayak and SUP rentals book up fast. Sea Trek offers rentals throughout the weekend, but we highly recommend making your reservation as early as possible to secure your spot, as our inventory is limited. Paddling out from Sausalito puts you in prime position to enjoy the air show from a safe and scenic location.

For folks wanting to watch the Air Show from the water in East Bay, you can rent from our Alameda location located on Ballena Isle and paddle out of the harbor along the Encinal seawall to view the show from the calm waters of Alameda’s western shore (and skip the traffic around Crown Beach).

Book a Scenic Sausalito Fleet Week Tour

For those who want a more guided experience, Sea Trek also offers the Scenic Sausalito Fleet Week Tour on October 7th and 8th. These afternoon tours begin at 1:30 PM, giving you the chance to paddle with a guide and enjoy the aerial show from a carefully selected vantage point. It’s a perfect way to take in the beauty of the Bay and the excitement of Fleet Week, especially for first-time paddlers or those who prefer to be part of a group.

Best Viewing Spots in Richardson Bay

Richardson Bay is a protected area with calmer waters, making it a safe and enjoyable spot to paddle. Some of the best places to view the air show from the water include:

  • Sausalito shoreline: Paddle beyond the marinas for great views and an easy paddle back after the show. Alongside the harbor entrances is a deepwater channel where there tends to be the most boat traffic. For your own safety and out of courtesy to motorboaters, please cross the channel into the shallow mooring area in the center of Richardson Bay.
  • Near the Tiburon Peninsula: This area offers expansive views of the planes looping around the bay with fewer boats nearby.
  • Angel Island: For experienced paddlers only, heading toward Angel Island provides a fantastic vantage point to see the aerial performances.

4. Stay Safe: Important Tips for Fleet Week Paddling

Fleet Week brings many boats on the water, so safety should be your top priority. Here are some essential tips:

  • Wear a PFD: Personal flotation devices are required by law and a must for safety. 98% of drownings could have been avoided if victims were wearing a life jacket.
  • Stay Clear of Restricted Zones: Make sure to check Coast Guard updates for restricted areas around the air show and make sure to limit your time in deep channels where larger boats have enough depth to navigate.
  • Signal and Visibility: Carry a whistle and bright clothing to ensure boats can see you (all Sea Trek rental life jackets come with a whistle).
  • Hydration and Snacks: Bring plenty of water and snacks to stay energized, especially if you plan on paddling for several hours.

Avoid the Boat Traffic

While Richardson Bay tends to be quieter than other areas, there will still be increased boat traffic during Fleet Week. Stay alert and keep close to shore to avoid crossing busy boating lanes. Use your paddle to signal if you need to make your presence known to a larger vessel.

Come Prepared with Layers

San Francisco Bay’s weather is notoriously unpredictable. Even if the day starts out sunny, winds can pick up in the afternoon. Wear layers, bring a windbreaker, and don’t forget sun protection like sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.

Respect the Bay’s Marine Life

With increased activity in the Bay during Fleet Week, it’s important to be mindful of the environment. Be sure to avoid sensitive areas, pack out all trash, and steer clear of wildlife zones. Practicing good stewardship of the Bay ensures this natural wonder remains enjoyable for all. If possible, please give harbor seals a wide berth (100 feet, as required by law).

San Francisco’s Fleet Week is one of the best times to get on the water, and there’s no better way to enjoy the show than from the seat of a kayak or SUP. Whether you’re paddling independently or joining Sea Trek for a Scenic Sausalito Fleet Week Tour, you’re guaranteed a memorable experience. Just remember to book your rental early, follow safety guidelines, and pick your spot in Richardson Bay for unbeatable views. Let the Blue Angels soar while you enjoy the ride!
